Dripping with irony
It's ironic, really. And quite hypocritical. Here we have Paul Martin accusing Stephen Harper of instantiating the Republican Party of Canada through his party's press releases, campaign rhetoric and TV ads - fine, fair enough. Not really a great line of argument, but fine. Now, (and this is the ironic part), he lowers the level of debate in this country by suggesting (without any evidence, mind you) that a Conservative government would stack the Supreme Court of Canada with right-wing ideologues. Doesn't that sound familiar? To the talking points of America's Democratic Party? Absolutely. Martin's argument that since there is a vacancy to be filled, Stephen Harper would use it to slant the court drastically to the right smacks of desperation to me. No evidence, and it's not like the Liberals haven't had their chance to fill a vacancy or two.
These kind of unsubstantiated arguments are pretty disgraceful, and only drag Paul Martin's legacy further through the gutter. And, I think, insult the intelligence of many Canadians. Paul - where are the new ideas and solutions for health care, the military, foreign policy, Canada's cities and crime? That's what Canadians want to hear from you, not this kind of rubbish. It boggles the mind as to why Martin's advisors can't see this.
DISAPPOINTED UPDATE: No, no, no - Stephen Harper has returned to his old Gomery rhetoric in the face of a dip in polling numbers. The positivity was working so well, and he should have spent the last few days of the campaign talking about ideas for the future, not Gomery. Unfortunate.

Yeah, I've got to say that this campaign has been brutal to watch. I don't know what got into the LPC, but it hasn't been pretty. I do not like Harper, nor the idea of having to deal with pseudo-Christian right wing ideologies oozing their way into the government. But from what I've seen with Harper, it may not happen! I mean, this is the CPC, not the Reform party.
I guess in response to your post, I too am disappointed with the lack of ideas coming from the Liberal braintrust. You would think a party of it's kind would actually have something to formulate. But they don't. And they are going to suffer for it.
At least my MP will be the PM.

LACK OF IDEAS.... get informed because the liberals have been putting ideas forward.. Regarding Abortion look what Harper said in 2004... http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/News/2004/06/04/485055.html
He said he would allow a private members bill. The current Conservative Party President, not leader but President, said “You can reast assure that there will be a private members bill on this” talking about abortion. Do you see the link? Comments like this and David Sweat stands on Women designed “to follow” are clear! The completely bias media never talks about those things.. What will the NDP do with the upcoming Conservative majority? Nothing.....

THOSE NEOCONSERVATIVES and THEOCONSERVATIVES are salivating because the progressive vote in Canada is now divided and the Right is united... It will result in an Harper majority government and Layton's departure from political life!

Well, Anonymous, I consider myself reasonably informed, and I've read the Liberal platform. Most of it is a reiteration of what they've done before, with a few minor new ideas tossed in. Nothing terribly revolutionary. Do you recall when Paul Martin was asked about his plans for small business and he returned that he supported the status quo?
Regarding abortion, unless there's a Conservative majority (and maybe not even then), there's no way that the combined Liberal / NDP / Bloc opposition would let a private member's bill pass. On social conservatism - obviously there are some social conservatives in the CPC, but I see little evidence to suggest that they'll be dictating the direction of this government. Finally, the media tends not to report in general about their editorials - the Globe endorsement of the Tories wasn't really seen on any other front pages, either.
And Peter - I think you're absolutely right. I think the LPC itself has some good ideas waiting in the wings, if only there was a desire to find them. Perhaps that's what some time in the wilderness will allow.

From King Ed:
"These are not progressive people," Broadbent told a news conference in Ottawa Friday. "The only time they talked about being progressive is in the dying days of the campaign. It's the only time they use the word -- when they try to go after the votes of ordinary people who are indicating they're going to vote for the NDP. Well I can tell you that this time it's not going to happen."
"The Liberal campaigning has been deeply offensive," Broadbent continued. "Offensive to women, offensive to workers, and offensive to members of the armed forces, and offensive to all Canadians for suggesting that a vote for anyone but themselves is not progressive. This, my friends, is the height of arrogance. It is clear the Liberal Party no longer has the moral authority to deserve people's votes. Their cynical manipulation … will not work this time."
-- oh, no you didn't! LOL!

Liberals are progressive, when it comes down to it. Has Martin spoken about it before this week? No. Has his leadership led to a very good implementation of those values? No.

Paul Martin has no credibility left
Let’s look at the rhetoric and the reality:
They say we would “Allow a front door vote on same sex marriage.”
We won’t, they did. Paul Martin and the Liberals already allowed a free vote on same-sex marriage and 33 Liberal MPs voted against this Charter right.
They say we would “Allow a back door vote on a woman’s right to choose.”
We won’t, they did. Paul Martin and the Liberals have already allowed these votes – repeatedly – and 13 Liberal MPs (including current Cabinet Ministers Albina Guarineri and Joe Volpe) say they’ll vote against choice again.
They say we would “Cancel the national Early Learning and Childcare Plan.”
We won’t, and they didn’t do anything for over a decade in power and only began to put their national child care plan in place under NDP pressure in a minority government.
They say we would “pull Canada out of Kyoto and kill $2 billion of funding to combat climate change”.
We won’t, and their commitment to Kyoto has been entirely nominal. Since Paul Martin became Prime Minister Canada’s emissions have increased faster than the United States. When he was campaigning against Jean Chretien, Paul Martin did his best to undermine Kyoto.
They say we would “join with George Bush and put Canada into the American Missile Defence Shield.”
We won’t, they did. On February 24, 2004, 105 Liberals voted against an NDP-supported motion to “oppose the proposed American antimissile defence shield and cease all discussions with the Bush administration on possible Canadian participation.” The nays were led by a troika of Prime Minister Paul Martin, then-Defence Minister John McCallum and former Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham.
They say we would help Stephen Harper “turn his back on the Kelowna agreement with Canada’s aboriginal peoples.”
We won’t, and nothing would have happened at Kelowna if the NDP hadn’t forced the deplorable conditions at Kashechewan onto the front pages and shamed the Liberal government into long-overdue action.

Hey anonymous... I am informed... about my party and my values. I refuse to support the current Liberal manifestation due to their track record, my dislike of Martin and their campaign strategies. I had my mind decided about my vote well before this election was called. I vote Green.
